Welcome to the website of the English-speaking catholic community of the European parish. Please click on this link for all the latest parish news.
My name is Fr. Eamonn Breslin, I’m Irish, I belong to the Redemptorist Order and I have been parish priest of this community since 1999. We belong to the European Parish, which was established in the late 50’s. It now consists of four linguistic communities; French, German, Flemish/Dutch and English. We are easily the biggest of the four (with one of the largest Sunday church communities in Luxembourg).
Our Mass is in English, but for many of our parishioners it is their second language. We’re an immensely multicultural community, Irish, English, Americans, Filipinos and Maltese; we have a growing number of Nigerians and a fair sprinkling of Lithuanians, Slovaks and other eastern Europeans, as well as some Indians and Pakistanis. I regard this ethnic mix as a wonderful thing, a real sign of the ‘catholicity’ of the church, ‘from every tribe and tongue and people and nation’.
We are quite a young parish; the average age of our parishioners is around 45. The majority are families with young children. We have so many children between 3 and 7 that we run a ‘Children’s Liturgy’ for about 40 in the sacristy every Sunday during Mass. We are fortunate also to have some excellent musicians, and there is considerable variety in our liturgical music.
The congregation comes from all over the country, so we are mainly a liturgical community. We meet on Saturday or Sunday for mass but it’s difficult to organise other parish activities. However, we do run a First Communion preparation programme each year and a Confirmation programme every two years.
The best way to get to know us is to come along to the Sunday Mass in Hollerich at 11.00 a.m. We have coffee and biscuits afterwards for those who care to stay – and it’s a good time to meet each other. So do come along and you’ll be most welcome.
