COMMUNITY MASS OF EUROPEAN PARISH MARCH 4TH

On March 4th, the second Sunday of Lent, we will have a community mass for the four linguistic communities of the European Parish in St. Alphonse at 11. 15 a.m.

Because of this, there will be no English mass in Hollerich that Sunday.

Parish Retreat – Update

There are a few places still available on the parish retreat – see details below

There will be a weekend retreat for parishioners over the weekend of 2-4 March, starting on the Friday evening and continuing until the Sunday afternoon. It will take place at Les Etangs in Medernach. The retreat director will be Fr Maurice Gilbert, who belongs to the Jesuit Community here in Luxembourg. He will offer a number of reflections during the course of the retreat and will also be available for anyone who may want individual guidance.

It is intended that this should be a silent retreat – except for the Friday evening and the Sunday afternoon. So the accommodation will be in single rooms. But if a married couple would like to come on the retreat and to share a room that will also be a possibility.

At the moment we estimate that the cost of the retreat (in a single room) will be about € 140, including accommodation for the two nights and meals. Some financial assistance may be available for anyone would like to come but cannot afford the full cost.

Places will be limited. So if you would like now to register interest in joining the retreat please contact either Marcella McCarthy on 691 435788 or Steve McCarthy on 621 319110. Formal application forms will be available in the parish after Mass early in 2012, or a copy can be downloaded below.

Threat to Religion Classes at the European School

A number of religion classes are under threat at the European School. The reason is that the number of children required by the school in order to ‘justify’ a religion class has been raised from 5 to 7.The 6th year class for the 2011 – 2012 school year has already been cancelled. When the second European School opens in Mamer in 2012 further classes will be threatened with closure, as there will be fewer students in each class. Latvia Foster Family Society

We received a letter from Ilze Golvere, who is the chairperson of the Latvia Foster Family Society (LFFS).

Dear Christians
We are writing to tell you about Latvian Foster Family Society (LFFS) and to request help for our Society. LFFS includes families which have taken responsibilities for the children who are either orphans or have been left without parental care. Our society was established in 1994 and includes 155 families and 324 children.

Our aim is to support, help and encourage upbringing of these children in foster families. We believe that only in a family-oriented environment the development of a fullfledged citizen with necessary skills for life can be ensured.

Our New parish council

On Monday, february 14th, the first meeting of the newly constituted Parish Council took place. The members, including one alternate, are: Fr. Eamonn Breslin, David Borg, Michael Doyle, Robert Foley, Cheryl Kouba, Marthese Lufi, Marcella McCarthy, Silvio Muller, Regan Otte, Monique Oswald. Cheryl Kouba was elected chairperson and the election for secretary will take place at the next meeting on Tuesday, May 10th. Several ideas were prososed in regard to the use and future of the Parish council. these included, but were not limited to, Inter-Parish/Diocesan dialogue, relationship counseling, social contact and procedures during Mass.

We would like to hear from you. Beginning on the weekend of Saturday, March 5th and Sunday, March 6th, forms will be available in the back of the church on which you will be able to volunteer to help serve the parish and to express your ideas to help make the parish meet the needs of all parishioners. Please take a few moments to fill in a form and then drop it into the box which will be located next to the forms.

DYING IN LUXEMBOURG

The Anglican community in Luxembourg has just published a very helpful brochure on the procedures involved when someone dies in Luxembourg. For those of us who are at ease with the procedures in our own countries, the Luxembourg ones may seem quite complicated and even excessive. But it’s good to be aware of them. The Scripture Cake recipe

Several parisioners have asked whether they could have the recipe to the Scripture Cake that Cheryl Kouba made for the Coffee after Mass last Sunday…..so here it is!

The recipe comes from Sarah Ban Breathnach’s book, Mrs. Sharp’s Traditions. She states, “When the family has friends over for Sunday afternoon tea, one Victorian teatime favorite is Scripture cake, a delicious confection made only from ingredients mentioned in the Bible. Victorian homemakers, who were expected to know their Bible as well as their cookbooks, had to decipher the mysterious ingredients…”

Ingredients:

1 cup Psalms 55:21

1 cup Jeremiah 6:20

3 Jeremiah 17:11

1 tablespoon I Samuel 14:25

½ cup Judges 4:19

2 ¼ cups Leviticus 6:15

1 tablespoon Amos 4:5

2 teaspoons II Chronicles 9:9

A pinch Leviticus 2:13

1½ cups I Samuel 30:12

1 cup Numbers 13:23

½ cup Numbers 17:8”

Key:

1 cup (or 2 sticks) butter

1 cup sugar

3 eggs

1 tablespoon honey

½ cup milk

2¼ cups flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

2 teaspoons spice mixture: 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1 teaspoon nutmeg

A pinch of salt

1½ cups raisins

1 cup chopped figs

½ cup chopped almonds

Instructions:

“Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter and flour a loaf pan.

Many Victorian versions of Scripture cake end by advising cooks to blend together and follow King Solomon’s advice for rearing a well-behaved child, found in Proverbs 23:14 – or, to translate, ‘beat well’.

In a large bowl, cream the butter (an electric beater works well) until light, beating in the sugar a tablespoon at a time until fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well. Stir in honey and milk. Sift together the dry ingredients: flour, salt, baking powder, and spices. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, blending until thoroughly mixed. Stir in the raisins, figs, and almonds.

Turn mixture in baking pan. Bake for 50 minutes.”
