Procedure for Ministers of the Eucharist
- On Sundays during the year, the usual number of Ministers of the Eucharist foreseen is three, one of whom joins the celebrant in distributing the Sacred Hosts, the other two taking the chalices and positioning themselves by the pillars on either side of the alter steps.
- During the summer holiday period, and for certain feast-days, only two Ministers will be designated ; these will take the chalices as above.
- Should you not be available on a Sunday or feast-day for which your name is down, please arrange for your replacement by calling another Minister directly.
- Ministers designated for the day in question should approach the altar via the side-aisles during the Sign of Peace, and wait at the level of the pillars.
- When the celebrant returns to the altar after the Sign of Peace, Ministers should take their places on either side of the altar (one of the Ministers should take the ciborium from the tabernacle, also returning it at the end of Communion).
- When the Ministers designated for that day have taken their places on the altar, should their number not be sufficient a replacement Minister should join them.
- Thank you for respecting the above procedure, which will ensure that the Ministers designated on a given Sunday or feast-day retain their “priority” for that day.
