9AM MASS CANCELLED, 9 JUNE

We have just been advised that major road works are commencing on 9 June on the Rue de Hollerich, directly outside the church of SS Peter & Paul. There will be little or no vehicular access, and the noise of pneumatic drills. After negotiation, the workmen have agreed to do some of the preliminary work on Saturday so that the noise will be kept to a minimum during the 11am First Communion Mass.

In view of this, it seems best to cancel the 9am Mass. Apologies for any inconvenience caused. The 7pm Mass at St Alphonse is likewise cancelled due to road closures in the city centre for the half-marathon on Saturday evening. Again, apologies.

The First Holy Communion Mass will proceed as planned, but please allow extra time to reach the church.

INTERESTED IN LEARNING IRISH?

Cumann Gaelach is considering offering beginners’ Irish language classes.

Before making any concrete plans, we would like to know how many people may be interested
in such classes. These may be mainly ‘virtual’ classes, using the Internet & E-mail for weekly lessons
and perhaps only meeting-up, once a month to deal with questions etc.

If you are interested, please E-mail me at: gearoid.ohannaidh<AT>gmail<dot>com

Please put in the Subject of the E-mail this text: [Irish Language Lessons]

Thanks,
Gearóid

READINGS & PRAYERS 1/2 JUNE, CORPUS CHRISTI

Today is the feast of Corpus Christi, the Body and Blood of Christ. This is a special celebration of Christ’s self-giving in the Eucharist, his abiding presence amongst us.

NOTE: Mass on June 1 in St Alphonse, 19:00 as usual. There is no Mass in Hollerich Sunday 2 June. There is a Messe Intercommunitaire in the cathedral at 18:00.

Page numbers below are for Saturday evening — Sunday may differ.
Prayers & readings
, NM. p. 435

Readings, OM. p. 786

First Reading: Genesis 14:18-20
The offering of bread and wine to God made by Melchizedek is seen as a foreshadowing of the bread and wine blessed, broken and shared by Jesus at the Last Supper, and offered at our Eucharist.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
Paul emphasises that he is passing on the tradition of the breaking of bread and blessing of the cup as he himself received it from the Lord. As Paul’s conversion was after the death and resurrection of Jesus, he regards the tradition of the Eucharist as a tradition coming directly from the Lord himself. Our Eucharist is part of that same tradition.

Gospel John 16:12-15
The gift of the Eucharist is prefigured in the ‘feeding miracles’ — the teaching of the Lord, gathering of food, blessing and abundance.

The sequence NM. 409
This is not usually read at Mass, but is a poetic reflection on the Eucharist.
