Week of Guided Prayer: 15-21 March

Rublev iconThis year’s Week of Guided Prayer during Lent will take place from Sunday 15 March to Saturday 21 March. There will be open presentations and discussions each evening as well as the possibility of confidential individual guidance from Fr HP and from our two visiting experienced prayer guides, Barbara and Margaret. Look out for further details here in the near future!

This year’s image is the famous Rublev icon. It represents the visit to Abraham of three angels, usually considered to represent the Holy Trinity (Gen 18). The unoccupied fourth place at table seems to invite the observer into the scene, as indeed we are all invited to share in the Divine Life of the Holy Trinity.

Meditation Group plants Trees!

You may think the parish Meditation Group a bit unworldly, but when the threatened high winds meant that the Youth Group had to cancel their tree planting project last Sunday, it was members of the Meditation Group who ‘picked up the spades’…. The trees had to be planted that day so we, together with some of the local residents who had bought the trees, braved the threatened winds to do the job. Happily the wind and rain held off until we had finished the job by 16.30.

Parish Youth Group combat Climate Change by Planting Trees

On 26 January the Parish Youth Group met to discuss an initiative to combat climate change by planting trees –  in the spirit of Pope Francis’ Encyclical Laudato Si. We watched a video about Laudato Si which you can see: HERE , and another specifically about the difference that planting trees can make: HERE.

Later the young people themselves planted a ‘weeping birch’ tree in the monastery garden. Here are some of Fr Ed’s photos of the occasion:

We will plant four more trees behind a block of flats in Luxembourg City next Sunday afternoon – 9th February.

Youth group – tree planting!

Young people: come along to the youth group meeting in the Garden Room after the 11.15 Mass this coming Sunday (26th January)! A simple lunch will be available and then we will show some short videos explaining how planting trees can help to combat climate change, and what Pope Francis’ letter Laudato Si has to say about this. Finally we will have some practical proposals to make a difference – by planting trees in Luxembourg.

Here’s a picture of our first ‘tree-planting day’ on November 11 last year.apple trees

Advent Meditation

Our little meditation group is affiliated to the WCCM (World Community for Christian Meditation). Fr. Laurence Freeman, the WCCM spiritual guide, has sent us a thoughtful Reflection on the Second Week of Advent which you can download here.

Our group meets every Wednesday evening at 18.30 in the Garden Room at St Alphonse for half an hour of silent meditation. Feel  free just to come along whenever you want. Further details on the Prayer Page of this website. There you will also find a link to Sarah Bachelard’s five inspired talks on Contemplation and Christianity in our Time. Highly recommended!
