It is two weeks since Easter. In the Gospel today, two of the disciples tell the story of how they had been walking from Jerusalem to a nearby town called Emmaus when Jesus appeared to them. At first, they had not recognised him because they had not yet heard that Jesus had risen from the dead. Then he sat down to eat with them, broke the bread, and they realised who he was.

In today’s story, Jesus appears again to the disciples. This time, they give him some fish to eat. Among the early Christians – the followers of Jesus – the fish became a symbol for Jesus.
