REFUGEES: URGENT HELP REQUIRED

John Coughlan, our representative with the archdiocesan outreach to refugees here in Luxembourg makes the following appeal to our community:

Refugees in Luxembourg: appeal for volunteers from the International Parish

In September the Archbishop asked every parish community to do whatever it can to welcome refugees arriving in or relocated to Luxembourg from other European countries. Last week our English-speaking Catholic community was approached by the archdiocese about taking responsibility for coordinating the distribution of meals at the new reception centre for refugees to be opened next week in Gasperich under the auspices of the Red Cross.

To do this, we need volunteers from the parish who can either:

  1. commit to a regular slot for distributing meals during the week
    or
  2. make themselves available on a flexible basis at weekends (or of course both). There will be three slots per day (breakfast/lunch/dinner) but exact timings are to be confirmed.

The coordinators will be John Coughlan and Marcella McCarthy. If you can help, please send an e-mail to costacoughlan@gmail.com indicating your availability.

Thank you for your (anticipated, but certain) generosity.

YOUNG PEOPLE REMINDER

Tonight (Friday 11th December) there’s an evening meet for young people (teenage) at St Alphonse, from 19:00. All are welcome to come for music, pizza and chat. We’ll be gathering in the meeting room in the garden/parking at St Alphonse. Can you pass the message on, please?

Thanks,

Fr Ed

REFUGEE AID

A number of members of our parish expressed willingness to help those arriving in Luxembourg as refugees from violence and persecution in their home countries. It was gratifying to see the level of interest and response.

I have received the following message from John Coughlin, our representative with the archdiocese concerning this urgent humanitarian crisis:

“Dear fellow parishioners,
We have received the first specific request for assistance in helping refugees in Luxembourg, namely for someone to coordinate the distribution of meals at the new reception centre on Route d’Esch:

‘La Croix-Rouge cherche pour le nouveau foyer à la rue d’Esch (ancien Monopol) une personne pour coordonner le service de distribution des repas. Le foyer ouvre le 15 décembre. Est-ce que vous ou quelqu’un d’autre de la communauté anglophone accepterait de prendre en charge cette responsabilité.
Mme Olive Lemasne qui coordonne ce service à l’ancienne Logopédie, est prête à introduire dans la responsibility.’

I am writing to you because you had expressed an interest in helping out. If you are available, or know someone else who might be – perhaps working in a team(?) – please let me know as soon as possible: as you see, the centre opens just a week from now.”
If you are willing to assist, or wish to know more, please contact John Coughlin directly. Parishioners have already volunteered: the more willing people we have, the more this important work is shared.
Many thanks in anticipation,
Fr Ed
