Today’s Gospel reading – John 20: 19-31

It was late, and the disciples were gathered together behind locked doors, because they were afraid. Then Jesus came and stood among them. “Peace be with you,” he said. After saying this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were filled with joy at seeing the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father sent me, so I send you.”

One of the twelve disciples, Thomas, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

Thomas said to them, “Unless I see the scars of the nails in his hands and put my finger on those scars and my hand in his side, I will not believe.”

A week later the disciples were together again indoors, and Thomas was with them. The doors were locked, but Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and look at my hands; then reach out your hand and put it in my side. Stop your doubting, and believe!”

Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!”

Jesus said to him, “Do you believe because you see me? How happy are those who believe without seeing me!”

Reflection

Try this experiment to see if you can believe in something even without seeing it.

Take a blank piece of paper and some lemon juice. Using a fine (and clean!) paintbrush or a cotton bud, write a message — such as “I believe!” — on the piece of paper and let it dry. Can you see the message?

Show the paper to your parents and family members. Can they see the message? Do they believe it’s there?

Now ask your parents to blow a hot hair-dryer over the paper. What do you see now?

Copyright issues

We broadcast our Masses and other services via FaceBook, and usually I play recorded music (for example, during Adoration). I then receive a FB message to say that copyright has been breeched. This is true, and of course not fair to the copyright owners. The problem seems not to be with live broadcasts, but with recordings; consequently, I will, going forward, as advised by FB, delete recordings which include the intellectual property of 3rd parties. As regard to the live broadcasts, I’ll publish in advance what music is playing, and where one can purchase it online (as download or CD). We’re learning all the time!

Thank you for supporting our online prayer/Masses — if we can find further means to give spiritual support to our community, we will, as they say, be on to it!

Enjoy the sunshine while it lasts; even though for the most part, it’s through the window!

Facing Unusual Times – Tips for Prayer – Week III – by Fr HP

Since Tuesday, 24th March 2020, we have been reading step by step The Mass on the World, written in 1923 by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955), a Jesuit priest, a theologian and a palaeontologist, whilst he was working as part of a team in palaeontological fieldwork in the Ordos desert, a barren landscape, west of Peking, near the border with Inner Mongolia.

So far we have read Part I, II, III and IV.

Next week we will read the last part of the essay, Part V.

Drawing from the essay, some tips for personal prayer which you may find helpful to accompany you this coming weekend are given below:

Covid-19: a poem by a member of our community

The poem below was written by Jacky Gentiles, a member of our community and published by RTL Today.  We thank her for giving permission for it to be shared here.

Hello Covid-19, Goodbye….!

Because we don’t need you at all,

People are suffering,

People are on panic buying,

People are even dying.

Hello Covid19, Goodbye…!

Because we want our life back,

Our life when we are free,

Our life when we can smile,

Our life when we can travel safely.

Hello Covid-19, Goodbye….!

Because we are holding on for better tomorrows,

We are longing to see our loved ones,

We are longing to be with our friends,

We are longing to feel the happiness in our hearts.

Hello Covid-19, Goodbye….!

Because you are only a virus,

We are humans and we have our Lord God,

We have him to protect us,

We have him to heal us,

And with this, we claim!
